Thornbury Radio - Your Choice, Your Voice

We aim to deliver high quality, relevant programming to Thornbury and surrounding villages. We support development of our community through frequent on-air mentions, sponsorship and campaigns. Unlike other stations, scarcely 10 minutes will pass without you hearing the word "Thornbury" or something else that is locally relevant!

Musically we are far more diverse than other stations on the dial. In contrast to most commercial stations that playlist only 300-400 songs, our playlist has over 5000 songs, and that excludes the music we play in specialist shows!

Listen 24 hours a day on 105.1 FM and 107.5 FM, online via the link below, on mobile using the dedicated iOS and Android apps and on internet radio players.

Befriender (Independent Volunteer) - Reconstruct

Part-Time

Can you commit to volunteering for a minimum of 2 years? Do you have 2 to 4 hours spare a month? Do you live in South Gloucestershire? Would you like to befriend a child or young person in care and make a long-term friendship with them? If yes, then volunteering for Reconstruct may suit you.

An Independent Visitor is a volunteer adult who forms a lasting friendship with a child or young person in care. They provide support by spending time together, helping them explore new interests, develop skills, and enjoy hobbies. This might include outings like trips to the cinema, bowling, or a walk in the park.

You must be 21 +, available with a flexible schedule usually weekends, and able to commit to at least 2 years. As a volunteer, you would spend around 2-4 hours each month with the child/young person with whom you are matched. Commitment is important because a child or young people need a consistent and dependable adult in their lives to help build trust and form a positive relationship.

Each volunteer is carefully matched with a child or young person from their local area. The matching process is really important to ensure that you and your young person get the most out of the visits.

WHAT DO INDEPENDENT VISITORS DO?
• Visit a child or young person every month, offering them a trusted and dependable adult friend.
• Build a consistent, positive relationship that helps foster trust and confidence.
• Spend quality time together, introducing new activities and experiences outside their placement.
• Support the child's growth by boosting self-esteem, strengthening mental health, and helping them build new social connections beyond the care system.

WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE DO YOU NEED?
• People Skills – Ability to build rapport easily and connect with children and young people.
• Communication – Excellent communication and written skills.
• Committed – Willing to commit to a child or young person for at least two years
• Role Model – A positive role model for a child or young person

Examples of activities can include:
• Sports
• Play football
• Cinema
• Bowling
• Go to the library
• Take a nature walk or have a picnic in a nearby park.

You will receive a budget for each visit to cover activities, along with reimbursement of your expenses. This will include travel and parking, ensuring you are never out of pocket.

As part of the recruitment process, candidates will need to attend an interview and complete the necessary training for the role. We will conduct safer recruitment checks, which will include an Enhanced DBS check.

National Garden Scheme - South Gloucestershire

The National Garden Scheme is proud to say that 80% of money raised through opening gardens goes to health charities.

In our area, Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath there are almost 40 gardens to choose from, all described in the local 'Yellow book.' In South Gloucestershire 7 very different gardens open to visitors providing 'Great Gardens, Great Cakes!' Some will open for groups, at a time to suit you, 'By Arrangement'.

Details of all the gardens can be found on the National Garden Scheme website below, or you can download the smartphone app. On both you can search for gardens opening within the distance you are prepared to travel. So why not go ahead and plan the gardens you would like to visit?

The huge benefits of gardens and gardening to health and well being are now well recognised. You may feel you would like to become involved in this inspiring organisation. It's possible to volunteer in a small way by helping with serving teas, or you may even feel that your own garden could be enjoyed by others. Seeing the pleasure on visitors' faces and sharing your endeavours with others, whilst helping the NGS charities, has a huge 'feel good factor.'

Treasurer: Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire

Full time

Interested in helping to run your local Citizens Advice?

Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire is a charity that provides information and advice to help people resolve their problems, including benefits, debt, employment, housing and so on. We provide free and independent advice to help people solve the issues they face and improve the policies and practices that affect peoples’ lives. We helped more than 7,200 people in 2024 in our community, dealing with more than 25,000 issues.

We are a member of the national Citizens Advice charity which means we have access to the services, resources and support provided by national Citizens Advice. However, as an independent charity, we’re responsible for running our own affairs within agreed standards. We have 17.8FTE staff working alongside more than 20 volunteers and we have an annual budget of more than £900,000.

We are looking for a new Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees to help guide and advise us on the financial health of this organisation. Responsibilities include presentation of the management accounts at Board meetings, and advising on the action that may be required when difficulties arise. (The Treasurer doesn’t need to be book-keeper or accountant but must have a good understanding of financial control and collective board responsibility).

You’ll need to:

* be available to attend at least four evening meetings each year of our Trustee Board, plus our Trustee Away Day, and be available to occasionally meet with the Financial Officer of the charity at a mutual convenient time
* have a willingness to work as part of a team
* actively participate in discussions that relate to the running of the organisation
* act in the interests of Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire and that of its staff and clients
* have good independent judgement and knowledge and experience of finance to help lead us and ensure that we comply with our statutory duties

We welcome applications from all sections of the community to enable us to have a diverse trustee board that reflects our clients and community.

This role requires good knowledge of financial systems. You do not need previous experience of working or volunteering with Citizens Advice service.

The post of trustee is a voluntary one but all reasonable expenses are reimbursed. The role provides a great deal of experience and satisfaction, the opportunity to develop your skills and utilise your expertise and knowledge.

For more information or an informal discussion about this role, please contact: Geoff Williams, Trustee on 07854 066176 or by email below.
