How it works

Recycle logo Welcome to Give 'n' Take - the easy way to find a home for unwanted items.

You've probably heard the mantra Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - well this is all about the 'reuse' part of that - finding homes for items that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Give 'n' Take is a simple way to find new homes for unwanted items. The basic rule is that items must be given away for free, no strings attached.

If you've got something to give away, just list it here and wait and see if anyone wants it. If they do, arrange the when and where of a handover, and they'll come and take it away for you.

Similarly, take a look through what's on offer, and if you see something you like the look of, just send a message and you might get it.

Is this like eBay or classified ads?

No, not really - this isn't about buying or selling, or being the highest bidder, this is about finding new homes for items that would otherwise end up being thrown away. Everything must be offered free of charge.

So what can I list?

Most things, within reason. See the rules, but anything from outgrown baby clothes to a pile of rocks. Items don't even have to be working - if you think your broken thingymajig might be useful to someone, list it and find out.

Do I have to offer guarantees/What if the item I get doesn't work?

There are no guarantees as to whether items work, or even if they're safe. If you're offering an item, be honest about its condition - you're giving it away, not trying to get a high bidder. Similarly, if you get an item and it doesn't do what you need it to do, you're not out of pocket.

If you collect an item - particularly electrical equipment and the like - it's your responsibility to make sure it's safe before you use it. Get it checked out if you have any doubts.

Offering an item

If you've an item you'd like to offer (or you want to make a request for something you want), you'll need to post up the details. Click here to read how to create an offered/wanted entry.

What happens after posting?

After posting up the details of an offered/wanted item, hopefully other people will see the item and respond; click here to read about how the process works.

I've seen an item I want!

If you see an item offered on the list of items that you would like (or a wanted request you can help with), you need to send a message in response. Click here to read how to send a response.

Get posting!

Now you know how it works, why not see what's already listed, or post an item of your own?
