Rules and etiquette

Recycle logo Welcome to Give 'n' Take - the easy way to find a home for unwanted items.

You've probably heard the mantra Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - well this is all about the 'reuse' part of that - finding homes for items that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Items must be free

Items must be given away for free - no requests for payment, no swaps, no strings attached.

What can be posted?

All items posted must be legal and owned by you; nothing 'adult'; no pirated software, copied DVDs etc; no drugs or medicines. All items must be owned by you. No commercial advertising.

Moderators can reject or remove any items they deem inappropriate or unsuitable for listing.

That aside, post up anything you want to get rid of - big or small, working or broken; you never know what someone else may be able to make use of.

For how long can I list my item?

You can keep an item listed as long as it's available for someone to collect. Offered items will automatically be removed one year after submission, wanted items after 60 days; re-submit periodically to reset the timer. If you find a home for something, or it finally really had to go to the tip, remove the item from your listings.

What details do I need to post?

Give as much detail about the item as possible. Be honest - if it's bashed or broken, say so.

If you're giving away multiple items, please list them separately - one item per posting - if they're not part of a set.

Selling on

Priority must be given to someone with a genuine use for each item offered - do not request items you intend to sell on or auction, or strip for scrap metal, without making that fact clear in your response.

Safety

Personal safety

Apply caution and common sense. Don't give out any more personal details than you're happy with; if you don't want people coming to your house to collect items, arrange to meet elsewhere. Be sensible with meeting up; let someone know where you're going.

Using Give 'n' Take will only reveal your username to others; not your real name, address, phone number or any other personal details, unless you include these in messages you send yourself.

Item safety

Items are offered without any guarantee of their working condition or safety - in fact we'd rather expect to see broken items offered in the hope that someone might be able to fix them and return them to use. Get items checked out by a competent person if in doubt.

Note

Give 'n' Take is a service to help people with items to give away find people who want them, but is not a party to any transaction. Items are offered as gifts from one person to another, without any guarantees.
