Tytherington WI Meeting

Tytherington Village Hall

Tytherington WI's October Meeting was the first at the Village Hall since last June. We were obliged to cancel our September meeting as this fell on the day of the Queen’s funeral. However Tytherington members have been meeting regularly throughout the intervening period with a variety of outings and events.

On July 19 we held our own fun ‘Croquet’ event in the lovely garden of one of our members, Jean Pritchard. August 14 was our annual Cream Tea event at the Village Hall. Although this was one of the hottest days of the summer the afternoon was well attended and worth all the efforts from our members with their amazing baking contributions. Later, on August 18, some of our members visited Bristol Zoo in Clifton before it closed for ever and on September 9 a WI trip to Tiverton when we enjoyed a canal trip in a horse drawn barge. On September 27 most of our members attended the AFWI Annual meeting in Bristol where the Rev. Kate Bottley, known from TV and Radio, was one of the guest speakers. We found her wonderfully entertaining if somewhat naughty. On October 11 we visited the Alpacas in Alveston and enjoyed a talk, tea and cakes, and on October 12 went on a trip to Oakham Treasures in Portbury which was intriguing — a trip down memory Lane!

At the October meeting Valerie Vizard, President, welcomed members and after discussing pending WI business she introduced the speaker, Mrs Ann Ferragat, who kindly came to tell us about St Peter’s Hospice. It was interesting to learn that they help people with a number of ‘life limiting’ conditions i.e. Cancer, Lung, Heart and Neurological disorders. The organisation encompasses a huge area from South Gloucestershire to North Somerset. She talked about fundraising; essentially hospice care is free of charge but it costs £26k per day to provide care with the Government only contributing £6k per day, leaving £20k per day to find. The pandemic had a devastating affect in this respect and financial recovery will take time. Volunteers are also an essential part of the operation as they offer care and support in all aspects from the general running of the hospice to supporting families as well as patients, both at home and on site.

We thanked Ann for her time and we all said we would do all we can in the future to support this amazing organisation. She then kindly judged our ‘animal ornament’ competition … 1st Valerie Vizard, 2nd Sheila Jones, 3rd Rosa Taylor.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday afternoon, 21 November 2pm, Tytherington Village Hall.
